Every paint finish is a trade-off between two things: how much it hides, and how much abuse it can take. Get that trade-off backwards for a given room and you either end up with a wall that shows every mark, or a wall that shows every imperfection in the plaster underneath it. Here is how to think about it before you pick a bucket.
Matt and flat finishes
A matt or flat finish scatters light rather than reflecting it, which is exactly why it hides small dents, patch marks, and uneven plastering so well. That makes it the natural choice for ceilings and for rooms where the wall itself does not take much daily contact, such as living rooms and bedrooms. The trade-off is that matt finishes are less forgiving when it comes to cleaning; a hard scrub can burnish the surface and leave a visible sheen where you wiped.
Silk and low-sheen finishes
A silk emulsion, like our Dizat Vinyl range, sits between matt and full gloss. It has just enough sheen to wipe clean without showing every ripple in the wall behind it. That makes it a better fit for hallways, kitchens, and children's rooms, anywhere a wall is going to get touched, bumped, or wiped down regularly.
Exterior matt emulsion
Exterior paint is a different category altogether, not just a different sheen. A product like Dizat Weatherguard is formulated to move with temperature swings, shrug off rain, and resist the sun without chalking or fading the way an interior paint would if used outside. Never treat interior and exterior emulsions as interchangeable, even if the can looks similar on the shelf.
A simple rule of thumb
- Ceilings and low-traffic rooms: matt or flat, for the cleanest look over imperfect surfaces.
- Hallways, kitchens, and kids' rooms: silk or low-sheen, for a surface you can actually wipe down.
- Anything outdoors: a purpose-built exterior emulsion, never an interior product.
